TMS therapy near Munich: Bad Aibling, Germany

The Douwes Brain Center is in Bad Aibling, 50 minutes from Munich, 20 from Rosenheim, right on the A8 autobahn. rTMS, accelerated TMS, neurofeedback and qEEG are building blocks of a plan that starts with an assessment and uses as little medication as possible.

Who this page is for

Distance is a planning question. Whether TMS fits is a findings question.

You searched for TMS therapy near Munich because a doctor mentioned it, or because the third antidepressant did not deliver what the first one promised. You live in Munich, Rosenheim, Salzburg or Innsbruck, or you would fly into Munich Airport, and you want to know before the first kilometre: driving, rail, parking, outpatient or inpatient, hotels for the five-day protocol, and what happens on day one. That is what this page is for.

Bad Aibling is a spa town in the Bavarian Alpine foothills between Munich and Rosenheim. Many of our patients commute from the Munich area for their daily session; those who travel further, including international patients flying into Munich, compress treatment into the accelerated protocol or stay in town.

What we use: rTMS, accelerated TMS, neurofeedback, TPS and qEEG brain mapping. Which building block applies to you is settled by the assessment. Overview on Treatments.

Bad Aibling station

By train

Line RB 58 of the Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB, formerly “Meridian”) runs from Munich central station via Holzkirchen to Rosenheim and stops at Bad Aibling and at Bad Aibling Kurpark. About 50 minutes from Munich Hbf, about 15 from Rosenheim; from the station it is a few minutes on foot or by taxi to the clinic. From Munich Airport, take the S-Bahn or a train to Munich Hbf first.

Standard

Outpatient

A classic rTMS course is 20 to 30 sessions on five days a week, each 20 to 40 minutes (iTBS: a few minutes). From Munich, Rosenheim and the surrounding area this is commutable; many patients schedule the session before work or in the lunch break. Whether a daily drive fits your life belongs in the first consultation, not in week three.

Clinicum St. Georg

Inpatient when it makes sense

Clinicum St. Georg has around 70 beds. When the rTMS plan includes infusions, laboratory and infection work-up or physiotherapy, or when the journey is too far, inpatient or day-clinic care is possible. We agree the setting in the first consultation.

Accelerated protocol

Five days in Bad Aibling: how to plan it

With the accelerated TMS protocol, several iTBS sessions a day are compressed into about five consecutive days, with breaks in between that you spend in the Kurpark, at your hotel or in town. For patients from Salzburg, Innsbruck or abroad this is the most practical route.

Three hotels in town, all within walking distance or a few taxi minutes of the clinic (no ranking, no partnership; book directly with the hotel):

  • Schmelmer Hof Hotel & ResortSchwimmbadstraße 15, 83043 Bad AiblingWellness hotel with spa, a few minutes’ walk from the Kurpark.
  • Romantik Hotel Das LindnerMarienplatz 5, 83043 Bad AiblingHistoric house on the Marienplatz, in the middle of town.
  • Hotel St. GeorgGhersburgstraße 18, 83043 Bad AiblingCountry-house hotel with pool — an independent hotel, not affiliated with the clinic.

Further accommodation is listed by the town at bad-aibling.de. Whether the accelerated protocol is right for you is decided by the assessment, not by the distance.

Your first day

What happens at the first appointment

  1. On arrival

    01Arrival

You are greeted by name, complete the medical history and go through prior findings, medication, contraindications and goals with us. Unhurried.

  2. Afterwards

    02Assessment

History, existing findings, questionnaires, clinical examination, and where needed lab work and imaging. Whether qEEG brain mapping is added (about 60 to 90 minutes, EEG cap, painless, no preparation needed) is decided after that, not before.

  3. To finish

    03Findings & plan

We go through the results together and discuss which procedure, which protocol and which rhythm (outpatient, accelerated, inpatient) fits you. Existing medication is never changed without your treating physicians.

Beforehand, in a free 15 to 20 minute consultation by phone or video, in English or German, we clarify whether rTMS or neurofeedback fits your concern at all. Only then is a kilometre worth driving. Details: First consultation: what to expect and Diagnostics.

Our aim

We restore functional balance — as far as possible without drugs.

You get what your findings call for. Not what happens to have a free slot. That is why rTMS is a building block here, not a product: an underactive thyroid turns down the baseline tone of the nervous system, and an underactive prefrontal cortex is then a thyroid case first, not an rTMS case. A chronic infection keeps the immune system running at full tilt, and stimulating the network alone works against a motor that keeps going. Both belong in the same plan as the coil, with as little medication as possible, whether you commute from Munich or travel from Innsbruck.

All statements on efficacy are based on peer-reviewed studies and clinical guidelines; the current evidence level is stated on every treatment page. Outcomes are individual.

Medically responsible: Dr. med. univ. Julian Douwes, Chief Medical Officer. Referring physicians reach the team on the same number; a written findings report follows the diagnostics. General location information: Location Bad Aibling.
